It hasn’t been long since water-resistant and water-proof flooring has emerged onto the market. Flooring technology has progressed significantly, introducing waterproofing technologies to enhance our daily lives with low-maintenance flooring solutions.

Before delving into the advancements of waterproofing technology in the flooring industry, let’s first clarify the distinction between water-resistant and waterproof floors, as these terms are frequently misunderstood. A water-resistant floor is capable of enduring exposure to water for a specified duration, whilst a waterproof floor is designed to prevent water penetration, so it effectively doesn’t absorb any water.

Why is water damage problematic and what makes it essential to have at least a water-resistant floor?

Many flooring options are susceptible to water absorption, leading to core swelling and uneven surfaces after prolonged exposure to moisture. To address this issue, a water-repellent coating has been developed for laminate flooring. This innovative coating is applied to the surface, effectively preventing water from seeping into the floor and ensuring its durability and evenness. Berry Alloc was the first flooring brand to integrate this innovative technology, leading the industry approximately 15 years ahead of other brands adopting similar techniques. While the presence of water-resistant and waterproof floors significantly reduces maintenance requirements as opposed to traditional options, it’s worth noting that such technology is not mandatory. Historically, floors have no universally possessed water-resistant qualities. With diligent care and maintenance, it is possible to keep a floor in good condition even without these advanced waterproofing technologies.

It is important to note that even if your floor is waterproof if a flood hits your house, this does not mean that a waterproof floor will fix the issue. The water which travels underneath your floor will eventually create mould and smell in your house which means you need to replace the floor anyways. But, for everyday use, this is where waterproofing technology shines.

The Click System

An additional stride in addressing water-related concerns is the introduction of the innovative click system. This system securely interlocks the planks, forming a tight seal that prevents water from infiltrating the joints. Beyond simplifying the flooring installation process, the click system offers the added benefit of enhanced joint security, minimizing the risk of water seepage.

Moving on to waterproof flooring alternatives, two notable options are vinyl flooring and hybrid flooring. Vinyl flooring, an established choice, is crafted from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). On the other hand, hybrid flooring, a more recent innovation, initially featured Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) as its base composite material, incorporating both wood and plastic. Subsequently, Stone-Plastic Composite (SPC) flooring emerged as a more prevalent and widely adopted choice in the present day.

The Bottom Line

The evolution of flooring has witnessed substantial progress in the realm of water-proofing technologies. From incremental enhancements like the click system to more targeted solutions such as water-repellent coatings and fully waterproof products like vinyl floors and hybrid floors, the industry has embraced a spectrum of innovations to address water-related challenges.
